How to Ace Your Disney College Program Phone Interview

One of the most common questions I get asked is, “what tips do you have for the phone interview portion of DCP application?”

As phone interviews begin for the Spring 2018 applications, which if you haven’t applied yet you can do so here, I thought I’d share some of my tips to help guide you as you prepare to interview for the experience of a lifetime!

1) Research potential interview questions.

There is nothing wrong with looking up potential questions beforehand. I still do this when interviewing for ‘big girl’ jobs and I find it to be extremely helpful! While you don’t want to write out lengthy answers and read them word-for-word, having a general idea of what you want to say is a great confidence booster! Here are some general questions that you may be asked:

Why do you want to do the Disney College Program/What do you hope to gain from doing the Disney College Program?

How do you think doing the Disney College Program will help you in your professional career?

Tell me about a time when you had to overcome a difficult/stressful situation at work.

Tell me about a time when you had a conflict with a coworker and how you resolved it.

How would you settle a dispute with your roommates?

Forgive me- it has been three (!!!!) years since my first interview, so I’m probably missing some other big general questions! But a quick google search will give you a lot more to study from!

2) Write out the list of roles you expressed interest in.

I really can’t stress this one enough. You don’t want to sit down for your interview and have your recruiter ask you about a role you don’t remember expressing an interest in. Writing down all of the roles you expressed a moderate or high interest in will enable you to research some questions that you may be asked about them. You also won’t sound caught off guard when your recruiter starts discussing them with you!

3) RESEARCH the roles you expressed interest in.

This is another one I can’t stress enough. If you expressed interest in a role you have no idea about, make sure you research it before your interview! For example, if you expressed an interest in attractions but absolutely hate public speaking, you might want to let your interviewer know that when the time comes as many attractions roles require you to speak to large crowds.

4) Write down a list of questions.

Normally, with any interview, your interviewer will ask you if you have any questions at the end. While your first instinct might be to say no, I highly suggest preparing a list of questions to ask. It doesn’t need to be more than a few, but they should show how interested you are in the program and in your recruiter! Here are a few that I’ve asked in the past:

How did you begin your career with Disney?

What is the best way to network during the program?

What kind of courses are offered during the program?

I personally love hearing other people’s Disney career stories, so this is something I asked even when doing meet and greets during my professional internship. And asking questions about the learning component of the program show that you’re here to better yourself and advance within the company, not just play around for a semester.

5) Write down your recruiter’s name.

This is another tip I have carried on past my college program interview days and I swear by it! Write down your recruiter’s name at the beginning of your interview and thank them, by name, when the interview is over. You can take it one step further and ask for their email and email them a quick ‘thank you,’ too. It’s a nice, professional gesture that is sure to make you stand out.

6) SMILE!

You might be looking at your screen confused, but trust me on this one. I’ve seen many a Disney recruiter offer this bit of advice on Twitter and I can tell you from experience that it WORKS! If you’re smiling and genuinely interested in/enjoying the conversation, your recruiter will know. Your passion and enthusiasm will shine through the phone and they will be smiling on the other end, knowing how much participating in this program would mean to you.

If Disney didn’t see potential in you, you wouldn’t have made it this far. So, put on your Disney shirt (or ears, I know people who have done that, too!), crank up that Disney playlist, think happy little thoughts and get in the zone so you can ACE, THAT, INTERVIEW. You got this.
